Stealing and defending
Every totem can be stolen. This is exactly how.
Starting a steal
Right-click another player's placed totem and choose to steal it. A timer starts, five minutes by default, and the owner is warned the moment it starts, wherever they are on the network.
Stay close to the totem until the timer runs out and it is yours, with every upgrade on it.
| Changes the time | How |
|---|---|
| Lockpick (Raid power) | Your steals take less time |
| Deadlock (Base power on their totem) | Their totem takes longer to steal |
| Shroud (Raid power) | The owner is warned late |
Raid powers count when the totem in your offhand has them as you start the steal.
What stops a steal
- The thief is killed.
- The thief strays too far from the totem for too long.
Nothing else. No upgrade can make a totem impossible to steal, and teammates simply cannot steal from each other.
Defending
- Be there. The owner is warned at once, anywhere on the network. The Sentinel power shows the thief and the seconds left from anywhere on the server, and the Herald power sends a Discord message even when you are not playing: see Discord warnings.
- Recall (Base, Tier V) offers to bring you back near your totem while it is being stolen. A card appears above the hotbar: twenty seconds to decide, ten minutes' rest after. The thief's Recall Block delays the offer.
- Make the room hard to stand in. Fortify, Ward, Alarm and the pack's turrets and traps all help.
- Decoys. A Decoy Totem looks real to everyone but you and goes off like a trap when someone tries to steal it.
Teleports during a raid
- Nothing lands within 150 blocks (by default) of a totem of yours while it is being stolen. Recall is the quick way back.
- Team teleports never land within 150 blocks of any steal in progress on the network.
- Random teleports keep 200 blocks away from raids.
- A thief who has just taken a totem cannot teleport straight away.
Where totems go
| What happens | Where the totem goes |
|---|---|
| You die to a player while carrying it | Placed where you fell |
| You log out (or crash) carrying it | Placed where you stood. If it is still there, untouched, when you log back in on that server, it comes back to you. |
| You log out in the air | Placed on the ground below you |
| You log out on a server where totems cannot be placed | Placed back at your last spot on a server that allows totems, and you are told where it stands |
| You die on a server where totems cannot be placed | Stays with you through the death |
| It is dropped on the ground | Places itself after a short while |
| It is put in a chest, backpack or storage system | Comes straight back out |
| You teleport to another server | Travels with you |
Servers without totems
Some servers can be set so that totems cannot be placed or dropped anywhere on them. You may still carry yours there, and you are told so once when you arrive. If you log out there, it goes back to your last spot on a server where totems are allowed; if you have never stood on one, it comes back in your inventory.
Areas and claims
Spawn and other protected areas can keep totems out. Elsewhere, a land claim never stops a raider near another player's placed totem, and a claim cannot hold a totem while any of its rules would stop a steal.
